LaBoyteaux–5/3/26–Daily Driver

We have an expression for a very dependable car. We call it a “daily driver”. As president, the economy would be my daily driver and I would take immediate action to address inflation. I am especially concerned about food prices. Of course there will be other crisis. I would immediately end the Iran war, including the blockade, and maintain a defensive posture.

The Voting Rights Act, our Constitution prohibits discrimination because of Race, Creed, National Origin and Sex. Discrimination might be ill-will or some kind of favoritism. But does our Supreme Court believe that the United States is a color blind country? The Voting Rights Act was established to address evident historic ill-will. Now, combined with the Supreme Court’s hands off positions on gerrymandering and dark money, we are seeing a partisan and discriminatory race to the gutter by the various states. There are fair ways to do redistricting, but the temptation to manipulate the system is great and the Supreme Court has failed to be the guardian of equality.

In a pending case before the Court, the administration wants to deport persons who are in the United States TPS (temporary protected status). Haitians and Syrians in particular.
These people have no home or lives in their native countries and their lives are at risk if they return. They have built lives and become part of communities here in the United States. The Supreme Court seems poised to allow their deportation along with the ongoing cruelty of this administration’s immigrant policies. The Court is so insulated and isolated from people’s daily lives and, in my view, complicit in the cruelty.
